In his inauguration speech, John F. Kennedy believed that all Americans had a responsibility to "ask not what your country can do for you—ask what you can do for your country." He emphasized the importance of being active and engaged citizens, working towards the betterment of society as a whole. Unlike his predecessors, Kennedy focused on promoting international cooperation and supporting civil rights. For example, he stated, "Let every nation know, whether it wishes us well or ill, that we shall pay any price, bear any burden, meet any hardship, support any friend, oppose any foe to assure the survival and the success of liberty." This stood in contrast to a more isolationist or conservative approach taken by some previous administrations.
