CTE, or chronic traumatic encephalopathy, is a neurodegenerative disease that is believed to be caused by repetitive head injuries, particularly concussions. It is most commonly found in athletes who participate in contact sports such as football, soccer, hockey, and boxing. The repeated trauma to the brain causes a buildup of abnormal proteins, leading to the degeneration of brain cells and the development of CTE.
