Public education suffered during Reconstruction due to a lack of funding and resources, as many Southern states were struggling to rebuild their economies after the Civil War. In addition, the implementation of segregationist policies and the rise of white supremacist groups limited access to quality education for African Americans. Furthermore, the imposition of Jim Crow laws and discriminatory practices in education further marginalized Black students and prevented them from receiving equal opportunities in schooling.
