One of the darker actions examined in a story from this unit is the murder of Duncan in Shakespeare's play "Macbeth." Macbeth's intentions behind this action stem from his ambition to become king and fulfill the prophecies he was told by the witches. He is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve this goal, even if it means betraying and murdering his own king.
If Macbeth were able to overcome this darker impulse and indulge a higher intention, such as loyalty and integrity, the story would change drastically. He would not have committed regicide, which sets off a chain of events leading to his downfall. He would not have to live with the guilt and paranoia that consumes him throughout the play. Ultimately, Macbeth could have avoided his tragic fate and preserved his honor and dignity.
