One of the darker actions examined in a story from this unit is Macbeth's murder of King Duncan in William Shakespeare's play "Macbeth." The action is prompted by Macbeth's ambition to become king and his wife's manipulation and encouragement. Macbeth's intentions are driven by his desire for power and his fear of losing it.

If Macbeth were able to overcome this darker impulse and indulge a higher intention, the story would have a completely different outcome. For example, if Macbeth were able to resist the temptation to murder King Duncan and instead focus on being a loyal and honorable subject, he may have been able to rise to power through legitimate means. This change in action would lead to a different chain of events, potentially resulting in a more positive outcome for Macbeth and those around him. By choosing a higher intention over his darker impulses, Macbeth could have avoided the tragic consequences of his ambition and betrayal.
