Identify one of the darker actions examined in a story or drama from this unit. In what piece is the action highlighted? What intentions or emotions prompt the action? How would the story or drama change if the character involved were able to overcome the darker impulse and indulge a higher intention? Explain.

And write like a fourth grader

One of the darker actions examined in "The Tell-Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe is when the narrator decides to kill the old man because of his "vulture eye." The intention behind this action is the narrator's obsession with the eye, which he sees as evil and terrifying.

If the character were able to overcome this darker impulse and indulge a higher intention, the story would change dramatically. The narrator would not have committed a horrific murder, and the old man would have been able to live peacefully without fear of being killed in his sleep. The story would have a much more positive outcome if the character had chosen to let go of his obsession and find a healthier way to deal with his emotions.
