In this activity, you will play the role of a community resource director for your school. Choose one category: diseases, disorders, or disasters. You will research valid health information online and prepare an informative FAQ brochure for students on this topic.

Step 1: Access and Assess a Resource
Begin by conducting some online research related to the topic of your choice: diseases, disorders, or disasters. Determine a valid resource by ensuring the author/s of the material are experts who are qualified to speak on the subject. You can also confirm a valuable resource by carefully assessing the information with your sharp critical thinking skills!
Step 2: FAQ Time
After you have decided on a resource, brainstorm 10 questions that you think may be asked by high schoolers on the topic. Use your chosen online resource, as well as information from this unit, to determine informative answers to each question.
Step 3: Design Your Brochure
List each question and answer in the form of a brochure, using a word processing document. Choose at least two relevant images/graphics to include on your brochure and ensure that your work is polished with proper spelling and grammar. Don’t forget to appropriately cite your resource!

Answer: A disease is an abnormal condition that affects the body or mind, often causing discomfort or impairment in normal functioning. It can be caused by pathogens, genetic or environmental factors.

Question 2: How are diseases transmitted?
Answer: Diseases can be transmitted through direct contact with infected individuals, contaminated food or water, airborne droplets, or vectors such as mosquitoes or ticks.

Question 3: What are the best ways to prevent the spread of diseases?
Answer: Frequent handwashing, maintaining good hygiene practices, vaccinations, practicing safe sex, and avoiding close contact with infected individuals can all help prevent the spread of diseases.

Question 4: What are the common symptoms of infectious diseases?
Answer: Common symptoms include fever, fatigue, cough, sore throat, body aches, diarrhea, vomiting, rashes, and difficulty breathing. However, symptoms can vary depending on the specific disease.

Question 5: How do vaccines work?

Question 6: What is the difference between viral and bacterial diseases?
Answer: Viral diseases are caused by viruses, which are smaller and cannot survive on their own. Bacterial diseases are caused by bacteria, which are larger and can survive independently. Treatment differs as viral diseases are less responsive to antibiotics.

Question 7: How can we support our immune system to fight against diseases?
Answer: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, regular exercise, adequate sleep, reducing stress, and avoiding smoking or excessive alcohol consumption can support the immune system.

Question 8: What are some common chronic diseases?
Answer: Common chronic diseases include heart disease, diabetes, cancer, respiratory diseases (e.g., asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and mental health disorders (e.g., depression).

Question 9: What is the importance of early disease detection?
Answer: Early disease detection increases the chances of successful treatment and management. Regular check-ups, screenings, and paying attention to unusual symptoms are crucial.
