Vanessa Nakate was born on November 15, 1996, and lives in Kampala, Uganda’s capital and largest city. Nakate did not grow up learning about the seriousness of climate change. Her activism sprang from a conversation she had with her uncle in December 2018. Temperatures are rising in Uganda, as they are in much of Africa. During a particularly hot stretch, Nakate asked her uncle if it was as hot 20 years ago. When he said no, Nakate wanted to know why. She began reading about climate change and global warming. The more she read, the more she was convinced that human actions were pushing Uganda and the rest of Africa toward a climate disaster.
