One example Dr. Jeff gave for convection was a pot of soup heating on a stove. In this example, the heat was transferred through the movement of the soup particles. The heat from the stove caused the soup particles at the bottom to gain energy and become less dense, making them rise to the top. As the hot soup rose, cooler soup particles descended to take their place, creating a circulating flow of heat.
