00:01: DNA is the basic unit of heredity in living things, whether it's a prokaryote found in the cytoplasm, or whether it's a eukaryote found inside of the nucleus. Now, the DNA is responsible for making another kind of nucleic acid called RNA, ribonucleic acid. And ribonucleic acid is very similar in form to DNA. Ribonucleic acid is a different five-carbon sugar, the RNA five-carbon sugar is called ribose. Still has a phosphate group and it still has four different bases. If you can remember the bases for DNA were adenine, guanine, cytosine and thymine, A, T, C and G. Most of those are the same for RNA except there's a slight difference. We still have adenine for RNA, we still have cytosine for RNA, we still have guanine, but now we no longer have thymine. Thymine is replaced in RNA with a new base called uracil, U. 01:00: So, in RNA, the main difference between RNA and DNA is that the four different nitrogenous bases are pretty much the same, except now there's no longer thymine. Where there's thymine in DNA, there's uracil in RNA. And the other major difference is that RNA is a single-stranded molecule. And so there's no matching up with C and G and A. There's no matching up there. It's just a single strand of all of these things together and their main purpose of RNA is to take information from the DNA to a place called the ribosome, so proteins can be made. So you could see that DNA and RNA are very, very similar in structure and function, except the main difference is that there's no thymine in RNA, there's only uracil.
