Two decades ago, researchers believed that homework had a negative impact on students’ physical and emotional health, yet students are still bogged down with hours of homework as early as the second grade. According to research by several universities, elementary students spend an average of 3 hours a week doing homework. The same studies revealed that the average high school student spends over 22 hours a week on homework. In fact, students today spend more than double the time on homework than students two decades ago. Sadly, as time spent on homework doubles, student performance continues to decline. So, how then is homework helping? Homework is harmful and not the key to student success.
