For this project, you will be required to submit two essays. It is recommended that you use an outline to help you plan out the structure of your writings. One way to do this is to plan out an introduction, a main section with around three key points, and a conclusion that summarizes your ideas.

First, choose one of the following two cases to write an essay about.

Case One

In 2016, a YouTuber called PewDiePie was temporarily suspended from Twitter after tweeting that he had joined a terrorist organization. In response, Twitter closed his account. According to Twitter, this tweet broke one of their community rules, which prevents users from promoting “organizations or individuals associated with promoting hate.”

Thinking about this case, what do you consider is protected under the Freedom of Speech amendment? Is Twitter obligated to let PewDiePie send these tweets, or do you agree with their decision to remove him from the platform? In your essay, consider both sides of the argument. You may include other cases, as well, or cite the Constitution. This essay should be 250-350 words.

Case Two

In 1932, a Black American called Angelo Herndon was charged with violating the First Amendment. Hendon belonged to the Communist Party, a party that argued in favor of racial equality and more support for people on low incomes. At that time, Black people in Hendon’s home state of Georgia experienced racial prejudice and discrimination. They were also segregated from White people. Hendon was arrested and his accusers claimed that he attempted to “cite insurrection” because he had some Communist leaflets in his possession. To ‘cite insurrection’ means to use violence against the government. In 1937, all charges against Hendon were dropped by the Supreme Court. In your essay, consider both sides of the argument. You may include other cases, as well, or cite the Constitution. This essay should be 250-350 words.

Having chosen a case, now read the following instruction for your second essay carefully.

For your second essay, you will write about a current event or issue that relates to the case you chose for your first essay. This issue could be related to freedom of speech, racial equality, or any other topic that is relevant to your chosen case. You may conduct research to gather information and support your arguments. In your essay, make sure to provide context for the issue you are discussing and explain how it relates to the case you chose. Your essay should be 500-750 words.
