One major difference between the eastern and western churches that led to their schism was the issue of papal authority. The western church, centered in Rome, believed in the primacy of the Pope as the highest authority in the church. In contrast, the eastern church, centered in Constantinople, believed in the shared authority of all bishops and did not accept the Pope's supreme authority. This difference in beliefs regarding papal authority eventually led to their formal split in 1054.
