Reflect upon the film’s theme and main idea. Identify a time in your life when you experienced having to interact with someone who was different from you. (For example, different ethnicity, age, religion, or physical ability) Explain your experience. Is there anything you would have done differently? Explain your answer.

The main theme of the film is about the power of empathy and understanding in overcoming differences and finding common ground with others. One time in my life when I experienced having to interact with someone who was different from me was when I was studying abroad in Japan. I was the only non-Japanese student in my program, and I felt quite out of place initially.

I remember feeling a bit nervous about interacting with my Japanese classmates, as I wasn't sure how they would perceive me. However, as time passed, I realized that despite our differences in culture, language, and background, we were all students looking to learn and grow from our experiences in Japan.

I made an effort to learn more about Japanese culture, customs, and language in order to better connect with my classmates. I participated in cultural activities, attended language exchanges, and joined clubs to interact with more people. Through these interactions, I was able to build friendships and learn from each other's differences.

Looking back, I think the only thing I would have done differently is to have been more proactive in reaching out to my Japanese classmates earlier on in the program. I was initially quite shy and reserved, which may have come off as aloof or unapproachable. If I had made more of an effort to engage with my classmates from the start, I think I could have fostered even deeper connections and understanding. Ultimately, my time in Japan was a valuable learning experience that taught me the importance of empathy, communication, and open-mindedness when interacting with people who are different from me.

a different one

Another time in my life when I experienced having to interact with someone who was different from me was when I started a new job and had to work closely with a colleague who had different political views than me. I come from a liberal background, while my colleague was more conservative.

At first, I found it challenging to connect with my colleague because our conversations would often veer towards politics, and we had very opposing views on certain issues. I found myself getting defensive or frustrated during these discussions, and I could sense tension between us.

Eventually, I realized that our differences in political beliefs did not define our entire relationship. I made an effort to focus on our shared goals at work and our mutual respect for each other's expertise. I also tried to approach our conversations with an open mind, listening to their perspective and trying to find common ground where we could.

Looking back, I wish I had been more patient and understanding during those initial interactions. I think I could have approached the situation with more empathy and compassion, recognizing that we all come from different backgrounds and experiences that shape our beliefs. Building a strong working relationship with my colleague required me to be open-minded and willing to engage in respectful dialogue, rather than focusing solely on our differences.

In the end, I learned that it is possible to work effectively with someone who has different beliefs and values than me by focusing on what unites us rather than what divides us. It was a valuable lesson in communication, respect, and empathy that I carry with me in all interactions with others.
