Retroperitoneal refers to the space in the abdomen located behind the peritoneum, the membrane that lines the abdominal cavity. Organs and structures that are considered retroperitoneal are located outside of the peritoneum, such as the kidneys, adrenal glands, a portion of the pancreas, and parts of the intestines.
