Most settlers took farm animals along the Oregon Trail because they needed them for transportation, food, and labor. Horses and oxen were used to pull wagons laden with supplies and possessions. Cows provided milk and eggs, and chickens supplied meat. Having farm animals also ensured a constant source of food and resources during the long journey. Additionally, settlers needed animals for farming once they reached their destination in Oregon or California.
