edgar allen poe family information

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. He was the second child of David and Elizabeth Poe. His father, David Poe Jr., was an actor and his mother, Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins Poe, was an actress. Edgar had two siblings, an older brother named William Henry Leonard Poe and a younger sister named Rosalie Poe.

Tragically, both of Edgar's parents died when he was just a young child. His mother died of tuberculosis in 1811, and his father abandoned the family shortly thereafter. After their parents' deaths, Edgar and his siblings were split up, with Edgar being taken in by John Allan, a wealthy merchant in Richmond, Virginia. John Allan and his wife Frances raised Edgar as their own, although Edgar and John had a tumultuous relationship throughout Edgar's life.

Edgar Allan Poe eventually married his cousin, Virginia Clemm, who was just 13 years old at the time of their marriage. The couple had a close and loving relationship, despite the significant age difference. Virginia died of tuberculosis in 1847, just 11 years after their marriage.

Edgar Allan Poe had no children of his own, but he did have several close relationships with other members of his extended family, including his aunt Maria Clemm, who cared for him throughout his life, and his cousin Neilson Poe, who helped to raise Edgar after his parents' deaths.
