Southwest Asia and South Asia Portfolio Worksheet Part 1 – Identify a Problem Write a short response in complete sentences to each of the following questions. Each response should be approximately 3–4 sentences. 1. What is the problem you have identified? Be sure to include the nation(s) affected. 2. What supporting background information identifies the problem and provides supporting evidence that the problem exists? 3. What are the roles of government, business, and citizens in relation to the identified problem? 4. Optional: Are there any images, charts, graphs, or maps that can help you illustrate your identified problem? You may include these in an Appendix in your final paper.

1. The problem I have identified is the water scarcity crisis in Pakistan. The country is facing severe water shortages due to a combination of factors such as climate change, mismanagement of water resources, and rapid population growth.

2. Supporting background information includes the fact that Pakistan is one of the most water-stressed countries in the world, with the World Bank predicting that the country may run out of water by 2025. Additionally, the Indus River, which is the primary water source for the country, is experiencing reduced water flow due to glaciers melting at an accelerated rate.

3. The government of Pakistan plays a crucial role in addressing the water scarcity issue by implementing effective water management policies, investing in infrastructure for water storage and distribution, and promoting water conservation practices. Businesses can also contribute by implementing water-saving technologies and practices in their operations. Citizens can help by conserving water at the individual level, using water more efficiently, and supporting government initiatives to address the water scarcity crisis.

4. Optional: An illustration of the decreasing water levels in the Indus River or a map showing the regions in Pakistan most affected by water scarcity could help visually demonstrate the extent of the problem.
