Most nations in Southeast Asia gained independence from western powers after World War II. Indonesia declared independence from the Netherlands in 1945, the Philippines gained independence from the United States in 1946, and several other countries in the region followed suit in the years following the end of the war. Some countries in Southeast Asia, such as Vietnam, gained independence during the Vietnam War (1955-1975).
