It is likely that Leroy “Satchel” Paige won more professional baseball games than any other pitcher in history. Cy Young, of course, is the all-time major league leader, with 511 wins. But he played in organized baseball, in which the season never lasted more than 150 games or so, pitched in a regular rotation with other pitchers, and rarely participated in exhibition games. From 1926 to 1947 Paige pitched for Negro League teams that sometimes played 200 or more games a year. He was in such demand as a gate attraction that he often pitched several games in a row or was “lent” to another team between starts. Satchel Paige was a(n)       pitcher.
