Provide two examples of incidences, since you started to teach, that influenced you to think in

particular ways about social identities namely age and race . Also explain how the incidences confirmed or challenged your thinking about the identities.

1. One incident that influenced my thinking about age and race was when a young student in my class made a racially insensitive comment towards an older teacher. This incident made me realize the importance of addressing stereotypes and biases based on age and race in the classroom. It challenged my thinking about how age and race intersect and how they can impact social interactions. It confirmed the need for open discussions about diversity and inclusion to challenge stereotypes and promote understanding among students.

2. Another incident that influenced my thinking about age and race was when a group of older adults in a workshop I was conducting expressed feeling marginalized and dismissed because of their age. This experience made me more aware of how ageism can intersect with racism and other forms of discrimination to create barriers for individuals. It challenged my thinking about how social identities are interconnected and can shape experiences of privilege and marginalization. It confirmed the importance of addressing ageism and racism in educational settings to promote equity and inclusion for all individuals.
