Three components of deterrence

1. Certainty: Deterrence is most effective when individuals are certain that they will be caught and punished for their actions. This certainty can come from visible and consistent enforcement of laws and regulations.

2. Severity: The severity of the punishment for a violation can also deter individuals from engaging in unlawful behavior. Harsh penalties and repercussions for breaking rules or laws can serve as a deterrent to potential offenders.

3. Celerity: The speed with which punishment is administered can also influence deterrence. Swift and immediate consequences for illegal actions can reinforce the message that unlawful behavior will not be tolerated and can dissuade individuals from engaging in such behavior in the future.
