When Columbus discovers the island he calls Juana (which is present-day Cuba), he takes possession of the land for Spain, plants a cross, and claims it in the name of the Spanish Crown. He also explores the island, meets with the indigenous people living there, and begins to establish relations with them. Columbus also names other locations on the island and records his observations of the landscape and resources.
