45 Northgate Avenue Des Moines, IA 50301 Grayson Palmer President, Grampy’s Granola P.O. Box 1489 Portland, OR 97201 February 1, 2013 Dear Mr. Palmer: 1 Who loves a Grampy’s Granola bar? I love a Grampy’s Granola bar! For some time I’ve been enjoying one every day after school, so I want you to know I’m not writing to complain about your products. On the contrary, I am a big fan of your delicious healthy snacks—even if, come to find out, “healthy” doesn’t seem a very good description of them after all. 2 It used to be when I came home from school that my mother would feed me fruit, nothing but fruit. While I do love an apple, an orange, or a banana, I admit that after a long day at school I was looking for something a little more interesting. You can imagine how excited I was when my mother first handed me a Grampy’s Granola Choco Chip Chomper. She had to convince me at first, as I was worried the snack might have been another of her schemes to try to get me to eat “healthier.” I don’t even want to tell you about the whole carrot juice routine she tried last year. 3 Still, I ended up loving that first Grampy’s Granola bar, and I’ve loved them ever since. I love the Choco Chip Chomper, the Strawberry Smoothie, and the Peanut Butter Bonanza. I even enjoy the Fabulous Fig Bar, which didn’t sound that great to begin with. Your bars are all delicious, and they give me the boost of added energy I need after school. They help me do my homework, go to soccer or band practice, or even just undertake a marathon of video gaming. 4 Given my love of your products, you can imagine how upset I was when one day my mother announced, “No more Grampy’s Granola bars.” Unfortunately, she’d discovered that many granola bars, including Grampy’s, were not the healthy choice she thought they were. Specifically, my mother had read on the Internet that while Grampy’s Granola bars were made with whole grain oats (a good thing), they were also full of sugar, fats, and calories. She read that in most Grampy’s Granola bars there is more sugar than in many chocolate bars, and nearly as much as in some cans of soda. That, let me tell you, did not go over well with Mom, and so your bars have been banned from our kitchen. Unfortunately, I have once again been condemned to a daily snack of fruit, fruit, and more fruit. 5 In other words, please help me, Grampy’s Granola! Help me enjoy your wonderful products by making them healthier, with less sugar and fat. If you don’t want to change the recipes completely, perhaps you could offer versions of your yummy bars that are not as sugary (so my mother will be happy) but that are still delicious (so that I’m happy). A “healthier” version of your bar would be a perfect compromise between Mom and me. Many other parents would feel the same way, too, and you’d surely sell lots of these bars. 6 So please, Grampy’s Granola, help a kid out. I don’t think I can take another banana! Sincerely, Ted Monroe Multiple Choice Question Read these sentences from paragraph 4. That, let me tell you, did not go over well with Mom, and so your bars have been banned from our kitchen.
