According to Hinduism, what determines how a person is reborn?

In Hinduism, a person's karma (actions and intentions) during their present life is believed to determine how they will be reborn in their next life. The concept of karma states that every action, whether good or bad, will have consequences that will affect a person's future. Therefore, individuals are reborn into a particular caste, species, or state of existence based on their past actions. By living a righteous and virtuous life, Hindus believe that individuals can accumulate positive karma and be reborn into a higher state of existence.
