Russia left World War I before it ended because the Russian Revolution of 1917 led to the overthrow of the Tsarist monarchy and the establishment of a communist government under Vladimir Lenin. The new Bolshevik government made peace with the Central Powers in order to focus on consolidating power and addressing internal political and economic challenges. The Treaty of Brest-Litovsk, signed in March 1918, ended Russia's participation in the war and resulted in significant territorial losses for the country.
