For this Discussion, please answer the following in at least 5-7 sentences:

1) Who is Chief Opothleyahola?
2) How did he respond when the Confederates asked him and his followers to join their side in the Civil War?
3) Do you agree with his response? Why or why not?

Chief Opothleyahola was a leader of the Creek Nation during the Civil War and a strong advocate for the rights of Native American tribes. When the Confederates asked him and his followers to join their side in the Civil War, Chief Opothleyahola refused because he believed in the Union's cause and was unwilling to betray his allegiance. Instead, he led his people on a perilous journey to escape to Union-held territory, known as the Trail of Blood on Ice, to seek refuge and safety. This decision was motivated by his unwavering commitment to preserving the rights and sovereignty of his people.

I agree with Chief Opothleyahola's response to not join the Confederates in the Civil War. His choice to remain loyal to the Union and protect his people's autonomy was a courageous and principled stand. The decision to lead his followers on a dangerous journey to safety demonstrated his commitment to their well-being and the preservation of their cultural identity. In a time of great division and conflict, Chief Opothleyahola's leadership and steadfastness in the face of adversity serve as a reminder of the importance of standing up for one's beliefs and protecting the rights of marginalized communities.

Chief Opothleyahola was a great leader in the Muscogee Creek Nation. He was born in Alabama in 1798 and died in Kansas in 1863. He was known for his loyalty and for being an incredible spokesperson for the Upper Creek. He refused to make a treaty with the Confederates and he and his followers were known as the Loyal Creek. He wanted to stay in the Union and wished to remain with the "Great father" (Lincoln). I agree that this was a wise choice, because we are all still a nation even through the hardships. I don't support slavery at all and because of that I believe Opothleyahola to have been an amazing leader of his tribe. At the end, his heart was broken by the decimation of his beloved tribe and people. Life is not fair and there is no guarantee that there will be a happy ending, even if you live right. However, it's better to live a life of integrity and face hardships than to live a life of lies and ease.
