The two cultures that used creatures to protect or transport humans after death are Ancient Egyptian culture and Norse mythology. In Ancient Egyptian culture, it is believed that the soul of the deceased is guided by the god Anubis, who has the head of a jackal, to the afterlife. In Norse mythology, it is believed that Valkyries, female warriors who ride flying horses, choose who will live or die in battle and then transport the chosen warriors to the afterlife in Valhalla.
