Muhammad moved from Mecca to the city of Medina in 622 AD, a migration known as the Hijra, due to increasing persecution and opposition from the Quraysh tribe in Mecca. The people of Medina had invited him to come and serve as a peacemaker between their warring factions, and provide leadership and guidance. This move marked the beginning of the Islamic calendar and the establishment of the first Muslim community in Medina.
