DNA and mRNA are related in that mRNA is synthesized from DNA in a process called transcription. The DNA sequence is transcribed into mRNA by the enzyme RNA polymerase. This mRNA serves as a template for protein synthesis during translation. Mutations in the DNA can cause changes in the mRNA sequence and ultimately affect the proteins produced by the cell. So, if there is a mutation in the mRNA, it likely originated from a mutation in the DNA.
