Cricket

(1) Although it may not be well known in some communities in the United States, cricket is a sport that gathers large crowds of passionate fans in some countries. (2) Cricket is a lot like the game of baseball in two specific ways: the game is played on a super large field, and the game is split into innings where batters take turns. (3) One team bats, which means that a player hits the ball out into the field. (4) While the fielding team collects the ball, and sends it back to the "bowler" (the equivalent of a pitcher in baseball), the batting team player continuously scores runs by running between two "wickets" (sticks placed 22 yards away from each other). (5) The bowler's goal is to get the batter out to keep the number of runs down, and there are different ways to dismiss the batter.
(6) Cricket started in England in the 16th century and was spread, along with British colonization efforts, around the world. (7) Cricket teams began competing internationally in the mid-19th century. (8) Today, cricket is played all over the world, including in Australia, Great Britain, India, Pakistan, Africa, and the West Indies. (9) In the past, players wore all-white clothing during games, but that tradition is less rigid now. (10) Players often wear the colors of their team during matches. (11) This is similar to most other sports. (12) Judging from its long history, cricket will be a sport that is played for many years to come.
