India was divided into two separate countries, India and Pakistan, following independence from Britain in 1947 due to religious divisions between Hindus and Muslims. Muslim leaders called for the creation of a separate Muslim state, and as a result, the partition of India led to the formation of Pakistan to provide a homeland for Muslims.
