One specific reason why the founders created the Electoral College as an election method was to balance the power between the larger and smaller states. The concern was that states with larger populations would have a disproportionate influence on the outcome of the presidential election, potentially overshadowing the interests and voices of smaller states.

The Electoral College addresses this concern by giving each state a number of electors equal to its representation in Congress (number of Senators + number of Representatives). This means that even states with smaller populations are guaranteed a minimum of three electors (due to every state having two Senators and at least one Representative). By relying on electors instead of a direct popular vote, the Electoral College ensures that all states, regardless of size, have a say in the election of the President.
