The Fourth Crusade (1202-1204) couldn't get local support due to their cruelty. This crusade was intended to recapture Jerusalem from the Muslims, but instead it deviated from its original goal and ended up sacking the Christian city of Constantinople, which was the capital of the Byzantine Empire. The Crusaders looted and pillaged the city, causing immense suffering and loss for the local population. This cruelty and betrayal of their Christian allies resulted in the Fourth Crusade being heavily criticized and condemned by both contemporaries and historians.
