Una Celebración en Cuzco
Celebrations throughout the Spanish-speaking world are an important part of a family’s life. Celebrations often include members of the immediate and extended families, as families tend to be tight-knit. Family events that are celebrated include births, baptisms, birthdays, holidays, and saint’s days. Many people in the Spanish-speaking world are named after saints, and it is common for someone to celebrate his or her saint’s day as well as his or her birthday.
In Cuzco, we were able to celebrate my grandparents’ anniversary. Everybody met there, and we had a big party for them. As I mentioned before, I’m not one to attend huge gatherings, but when it’s my family, I love every opportunity for all of us—cousins, uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews—to get together and celebrate a special family event.
Of course, no Reyes family event is complete without a celebratory meal! Most of our family celebrations include a huge meal that everyone prepares. It is typical for people to bring food that they prepare at home to these get-togethers. It is not common to have these celebrations catered. I love my grandmother’s homemade empanadas, which are pastries filled with chicken, beef, or pork. I look forward to those at any celebration with my grandparents!
