India was divided into two different countries, India and Pakistan, when it won independence from Britain primarily due to religious and political reasons. The division was based on the idea of creating separate nations for Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority regions, which would later become East and West Pakistan. This division was driven by communal tensions between Hindus and Muslims, as well as the demand for a separate Islamic state by the Muslim League led by Muhammad Ali Jinnah. The Indian independence movement and negotiations with the British authorities resulted in the agreement to divide the subcontinent along religious lines, leading to the partition of India in 1947.
