define Place Value

Place value is the numerical value that a digit has depending on its position in a number. It determines the significance of a digit and how much value it contributes to the overall value of the number. In a decimal system, such as the commonly used base-10 system, each digit's place value is ten times greater than the digit to its right and ten times less than the digit to its left. The position of the digit determines whether it represents ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, and so on.
