Pangaea (also spelled as Pangea) is a supercontinent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras, about 300-175 million years ago. It was made up of almost all of Earth's continental plates merged together into a single landmass. The name "Pangaea" is derived from Greek, meaning "all lands".
This supercontinent began to break apart due to tectonic plate movements, eventually forming the continents we recognize today. The process of breaking apart is known as continental drift or plate tectonics.
