The Second Crusade was aimed to recapture Edessa. After the fall of the County of Edessa to the Muslim forces in 1144 during the First Crusade, Pope Eugenius III called for a new crusade to retake the city. The Crusade was launched in 1147 and involved a coalition of European forces led by King Louis VII of France and Conrad III of Germany. However, despite their efforts, the crusaders were unsuccessful in recapturing Edessa.
