"Bats"

Why do so many people think that bats are bad?

Scientists have been studying bats for many years. They have discovered that even though bats are nearly blind and like to hang upside down, these furry winged animals are very helpful to humans. Bats help to control mosquitoes and other harmful insects by feasting on them. One large bat colony, about 30,000 bats, can eat as many as 19 million mosquitoes in one night.

It is possible that bats have such a bad reputation because of the many stories and movies that show bats as dirty, scary, bloodsucking vampires that attack people.

The truth is that bats are generally shy and try to avoid people. Vampire bats can be found only in the tropics, and these bats attack animals instead of humans. Most bats eat only fruits and insects. Bats spend several hours each day grooming themselves. They are mostly very clean, neat mammals.

Bats really aren't bad at all!
