For millions of years, the female loggerhead turtle has engaged in the same life-threatening practice. Under the cover of darkness, she leaves the sea and crawls up the beach to lay her eggs in the sand. Each loggerhead turtle may lay up to 100 eggs at a time, five times a season. This devotion is necessary for the animals' survival; scientists believe that just 1 out of every 1,000 hatchlings survives into adulthood. The ritual takes place each year between October and February on the shores of South Africa and Mozambique. Do It! It is _________ for these turtles to lay many eggs.
