Objects found closer to the surface during an excavation site are usually more recent or belong to a later time period. This is because over time, new layers of sediment and soil accumulate on the surface, burying older artifacts deeper within the site. As archaeologists dig deeper, they are uncovering older layers that represent earlier periods of human history.
