One purpose of the Freedmen's Bureau was to provide assistance and support to newly freed African Americans and impoverished white individuals in the aftermath of the Civil War. The Bureau aimed to ensure their basic needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare were met and also worked to provide education and employment opportunities to help them rebuild their lives.
