The town should consider planting trees as windbreaks along the pastures on Winter Knoll and Freeze Road. The roads are a terrible hazard in winter, and intense warm-weather squalls are eroding the land.
Every winter, the wind blows snow drifts off the fields and onto the roads, making the roads slippery and hazardous. There is a serious accident on one of the roads at least once a month. A line of quick-growing evergreen trees would prevent the snow from reaching the road.
In summer, anyone can see that the wind is stripping soil from the fields. Some of it ends up in the road or plastered to the buildings that line the other side of the farms. Last year, farmers at both ends of the knoll had to truck in soil for planting. Trees could protect the soil from wind, too.
