While in Bethlehem, Mary gives birth to Jesus in a stable because there was no room for them in the inn. The baby is wrapped in swaddling clothes and placed in a manger.
In the same region, some shepherds are keeping watch over their flock when an angel of the Lord appears to them, announcing the birth of Jesus. The angel tells them that they will find the baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger. Suddenly, a multitude of heavenly hosts joins the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward men."
The shepherds quickly go to Bethlehem and find Mary, Joseph, and the baby, just as the angel had told them. They spread the word about Jesus and all who heard it were amazed. Mary, on the other hand, treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart. The shepherds then returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen.
After eight days, in accordance with Jewish custom, the baby is circumcised and named Jesus. Mary and Joseph bring Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. There, they encounter a righteous and devout man named Simeon, who had been waiting for the consolation of Israel. Simeon is filled with joy upon seeing Jesus and prophesies about him, saying that he will be a light for revelation to the Gentiles and the glory of Israel.
The chapter concludes by introducing the character of Anna, an elderly prophetess who also recognizes Jesus as the redemption of Jerusalem and shares this knowledge with others.
