One story in the unit that features a mysterious stranger is "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In this story, a young woman named Helen Stoner seeks the help of the famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his assistant Watson. Helen's twin sister, Julia, had died under mysterious circumstances, and Helen fears that she might suffer the same fate.
The stranger in this story is Dr. Grimesby Roylott, the stepfather of the twins. He is a menacing and enigmatic figure who creates an atmosphere of fear and suspense. When Holmes investigates the matter, he discovers that Roylott has been using a venomous snake to kill the female members of his family for monetary gain.
"The Adventure of the Speckled Band" fits the theme of the mysterious stranger as the appearance of Roylott in the lives of the sisters brings chaos and danger. The dramatic events surrounding his actions result in the improvement of Helen's life as Holmes is able to prevent her from meeting the same tragic fate as her sister.
However, this story also deviates from the traditional form of the theme. Unlike the typical mysterious stranger who makes a sacrifice, Roylott is a villainous character who seeks to harm others for personal gain. He does not make any sacrifices but instead uses his knowledge of snake venom to cause harm. Additionally, Holmes, the true protagonist, is the one who ultimately saves the day and improves the life of Helen. Therefore, while "The Adventure of the Speckled Band" features a mysterious stranger, it deviates from the traditional form of the theme in terms of the character's motivations and the resolution of the story.
