After the Civil War, Black Americans in Texas faced numerous obstacles to achieving equality. The dominant obstacle was the implementation of "Black Codes," which imposed severe restrictions on their freedom, mobility, and economic opportunities. These codes also prohibited them from voting, serving on juries, or testifying against white individuals in court. Additionally, acts of violence and terrorism, such as the formation of the Ku Klux Klan, hindered Black Americans' ability to exercise their civil rights and live freely without fear.
