The sun had beamed from high overhead that Saturday when Aiko rode to her friend Melanie's house. Now, as she was leaving for home, the sun was dropping fast and darkness was closing in. Not only that, but dense purple clouds had formed. Aiko pulled up her hood and waved goodbye to Melanie as the first big raindrops splashed on her head. Then she got on her bike and sped down the street, hoping to get home before the real downpour hit. At the end of the block was the corner convenience store she had passed on the way there. She turned right and kept riding. A few blocks later, she knew there was a turn coming up. Where is it? She wondered, beginning to feel panicked. Nothing looked the same in the evening light, and it was raining harder now, too. Maybe I should turn back and ask Melanie's parents for directions, she thought. She pulled over to the side of the road to think. Just then, a car drove toward her. She couldn't believe her eyes. It was her dad's red station wagon! He saw her waving at him and came to a stop. Aiko was so relieved to see him, she nearly started crying.

"I was afraid you would get soaked riding home," Aiko's father told her when she reached the car. "So I came to give you a ride. Did you have a good time?"
"Oh, yes," she answered as he helped her stow her bike in the back of the wagon. She didn't want to admit that she had gotten lost. But on the way home, she noticed every turn her father made. Next time, she thought to herself, I'll remember the way—and I'll take my raincoat
