The Society of Jesus, also known as the Jesuits, developed out of the Council of Trent with the aim of defending the Catholic faith and serving as soldiers of God. The Jesuits were founded by Ignatius of Loyola in 1540, and their mission included education, missionary work, and promoting Catholicism during the Counter-Reformation.
