Christians and Jews within the Islamic Empire were excluded from holding the highest positions of political power and authority. For instance, they were generally not allowed to become caliphs or hold important government posts. However, they were allowed to retain their religious practices and had the right to follow their own religious and legal systems under certain conditions.
